CREATING A COHERENT SET
ILLUSTRATION
Diana’s Dishware is a set of 12 double-sided cards based around the life and essence of the People’s Princess, Diana, Princess of Wales.
I was tasked with the creation of a set of art cards (format popularized by the surrealists) that represented a hero or villain from either the past or present. Emphasis was placed on creating pieces that function as a coherent set, but still maintains a distinct visual charm when isolated from one another. Through analogy, each card is meant to represent some part of the chosen person’s essence.
I chose to represent my chosen hero, Diana, in the form of ornate dinner plates. Fine china has been a symbol of status for years, but in its simplicity, they are vessels for food, which is meant for everyone. Diana, despite her royal status, worked continuously to improve the lives of those less fortunate.

The plates are divided into four colors, which are not only colors found in fine china, but also relate to each analogy. Ornately drawn borders and central images contribute a sense of refined elegance, while flat, muted colors echo Diana’s approachability and simplicity. Text, when used, is rendered in slab serifs, a modern take on a classic, similar to Diana being a modern princess. Cards are printed to scale of real plates, and contain information about each analogy on the back, emblematic of the logo and stamp on the back of a traditional plate.
